This year, instead of again being annoyed that Palm Sunday and Sunday of the Passion are forced to share a single stage, I decided to embrace the paradox, and remembered the helpful guideline that Jesus is both.

Over the recent Thanksgiving weekend, when I had plenty of time to myself due to my family being away, I did a fair bit of online reading. Here's some of what kept me interested this weekend, from the political and controversial to the heartbreaking and beyond. I am reminded that the ELCA has Social Statements on many of the pressing social and political issues of our time. I'll finish with some hopefulness.

Ash Wednesday

Matthew 6:1-6, 16-21

Ash Wednesday doesn't really make sense. We mark our foreheads with ashes, a public sign of repentance, and then we hear Jesus' words in Matthew telling us, “Beware of practicing your piety before others in order to be seen by them.” What are we doing?
